2016-06-17-16.44.08.jpgParadise, CA, zone 9. I know it's a long shot, but any ideas on this apple cultivar? Tree is 50+ years old and is part of an old orchard, so not a newer cultivar. Some fruit is ripening now, so an early summer variety that does not ripen all at once2016-06-17-16.44.08-1.jpg. Average size, wider than tall shape, green with varying degree of red striations. Flesh is white and crisp, not at all mealy and does brown fairly quickly. Superb sweet-tart flavor.

Not sure but it seems to resemble a winesap apple.  Similar to pictures of it I have seen online.

Thank you for the idea but not a winesap... They do look similar but are not as squatty in shape and also ripen in the fall. This one is ripens in June-July and has for years. Thank you though! All ideas appreciated 🙂

A lot of people on this forum know how to graft, but ID is a super advanced skill. I am not good at it yet. Sorry,

Yes, I've been intrigued.  The pronounced striping is striking.  My web searching didn't give any promising hits.

I’d forwarded a link here to one of our ID Team members ... he’s apparently busy in an orchard!  Seems a ‘blossom end’ photo might help some.

To me, they look, and sound like Gravensteins, with their short stems (as in pushing themselves onto the ground).  ‘Older strains’ of Gravensteins have more striping than the newer, often red sports.  And the sweet/ tart - classic Grav!

...sure wish I could take a bite to find out Laugh
