Hello all,
We recently joined battle against a bamboo hedge growing along one of our fence lines. We're looking at replacements for when we finally get the rest of these rhizomes cut-out. The spot is just within the dripline of a mature english walnut to the east, and also shaded by a good sized redwood at the north end of the hedge.
We liked the privacy the bamboo gave, and were looking at an evergreen replacement. Given the full day shade, and the thick layer of needles and impossibly tiny cones that fall in it's bed each year, evergreen huckleberry seemed like a great option. Doing some research on walnut toxicity lists though, I have seen that blueberry is typically listed as 'sure to die' when within sight of a black walnut. Is there a chance the huckleberries could survive the english walnut, with its lower juglone dose - or should we not waste money trying? Does anyone have experience with this combo?
Thanks,
Keith

I don't have specific experience, but I would agree with you that your plants are much more likelly to survive under English/Persian walnut than Black walnut. I've heard people say that E'P walnut isn't that bad and plants are just a bit harder to grow. I have dwarf Eng/P walnuts in my yard and they haven't harmed other plants.

Evergreen huckleberries are relatively slow-growing and will not provide the privacy of bamboo; you might eventually after many years achieve a 6-foot hedge (in shade). The plants have a random growth habit but can be trimmed to shape if reduced fruiting is not a major concern. 2 or 3-foot spacing for a privacy hedge.
