Viking apple, which Viking, and what are the differences?

There appears to be two apple varieties with the same name.
Viking: Introduced in South Dakota 1925, as a selection from Scandinavian scions. Some sources say this one is named Vicking, but others say Viking.
Viking: PRI joint release, Wisconsin 1969.

I grafted a scion labeled Viking, but I don't know which one it was. It has not yet fruited. When it does fruit I would like to be able to tell.

They sound pretty much the same, but for the 1925 Viking it says:
"medium-dark 75-100% red-purple red, alternating on green-yellow ground."
By "alternating" do they mean striped?
No photo of the 1925 Viking, but the 1969 Viking is 80-100% dark purplish red, blushed.
