Hi all,
I planted a dozen wild crabapple trees that I transplanted from land at my parents Retirement home. They are in one of the best* planting sites on the property, the hill thats lakeside. My question is should I move them or graft onto them, using them as rootstock? I have fifty fruit trees, mostly apples, coming this spring and need to decide.
My original goal was to see what their fruit is like and cull accordingly. Will probably have to cull them all anyways but was curious about them. As I examined them closely, each one is different. Some have skinny pointy leaves, others large/small rounder ones, three even have reddish leaves. These were all found around the same area and I have gotten fruit from a couple larger ones, about an inch and half red tearshaped, dolgotype fruit.
There are probably 20-30 left I didnt dig up but marked off with orange tape so they wouldnt be killed by the workers clearing the area.
Anyways, what do you think I should do: dig them outta the good site or graft onto them if their fruit isn't good?
Thanks for the help,
-Jeremiah
