Hi,

We are looking at getting a new plum tree and my wife came across the Schoolhouse Plum in the Raintree catalog. Does anyone have experience with this variety in the Portland Metro area? Or in the Willamette Valley? It says it is a prune plum which I am hoping we can dry. We already have a Stanley Plum, will it pollinate the Schoolhouse?

Thanks,

Tom

Welcome to the forum Tom.

I'm curious to see the responses too.  I've been intrigued by the Raintree cataolog description and picture of that plum for years.  I really like European prune-type free stone plums with their meatiness and high sugar content.

I got a scion and tried to graft it last year, but I think my timing was bad.

If this hasn't been answered yet, I have schoolhouse and I would best describe it as a yellow Italian Prune. Nice flavor and firm texture yet not quite as sweet as Italian or Stanley. I haven't tried drying them but can't imagine they wouldn't be great dried.  Freestone and good bearer.  Ours grows right next to our Stanley, not sure if they pollinate each other pollination is good on both.
