Hi Folks,

I have a tropic sweet apple which is a University of Florida patented derivative of Anna that is exhibiting some sort of leaf problem.  Can you take a look at these pictures and tell me what you think it might be?

Thanks.

Careful examination of the leaf can give an insight exactly what the problem is, but sometimes we need to dig a bit deeper to find the cause of this. I think there are four possibilities that are causing browning of apple leaves they are pests, diseases, cultural activities and environmental inputs. You should examine correctly or you can call experts for this work.

...I thought ‘sunburn,’ ..or anything having interrupted the flow of nutrients to the outer edge/ tip of the leaf.  Is it only two or three leaves, or substantially more?

If it’s insect damage, there may be a few of the culprits still around, or webbing, as with ‘leaf rollers.’  ..or chewing.

I’d usually just ‘grind out’ (between thumb & fingers) or pluck & chuck such leaves, hoping I’d removed what may have caused it…  As long as the majority of leaves look as good as the ones showing up in the background, I wouldn’t worry...

I did contact the nursery who sold them to me and they told me they could not be sure what it was but that it did not look to bad.  They said I should remove the leaves with the problems and that is what I have been doing.  Most of the leaves seem ok but  few have these problems.  Lately my Dorsett Golden apple tree has been exhibiting similar browning of its leaves.  I think perhaps it might be a fungus so for the dorsett golden I have been using one teaspoon of a copper fungicide solution mixed in 1 gal of water and spraying that on the leaves.  I recently purchased three southern variety soft pear trees from the same nursery.   All three of those trees came with some fungul action on their leaves but one of them was particularly bad.  This copper fungicide spray (applied once a week) seems to have worked very well on them as it seems to have killed the old fungus and the new growth is very clean.   I thought I would give this solution a try on my apple trees.  I plan to wait a week and if I don't see any negative effects on the dorsett golden tree I will begin spraying the tropic sweet also.  Thanks to everyone for taking the time to respond.

Cheers!
