Gala in Container

I have a Gala grafted onto an M27 rootstock at the exchange this year. It is in a 1 gal container and has about 18" of new growth on the scion. Since space is a problem in my yard I plan to grow it in a container.

I would like opinions on container size and type , planting soil, and planting instructions.

Thanks!

I vote for about a 20-gallon container filled with plain dirt and topped with about 4 inches of a coarse mulch, such as shredded bark or wood chips. This has done well for us and the decaying mulch will feed your dirt all that the apple needs.

Thanks for your input Applenut. Sounds easy enough if I can locate/build a 20 gal pot. I may repot to a 5-10 gal container this fall and go for the big one next year.
