This is news from OPB
A new apple released by Washington State University — the first since the Cosmic Crisp — may be headed for the cider press. The Capital Press reports that the new variety, WA 64, could be licensed directly to America’s largest independent cidery, Corvallis-based 2 Towns. Though it’s currently only available through commercial licensing, the apple is set to go to market in 2029.
I drink 2 towns cider all the time. I also make my own cider. This should be interesting. I have had a cosmic crisp apple , but I do not grow one.
Hi,
That's a beautiful apple. If they're selling it to cidery, is it one of those high-tannin apples? I've tried a few of the old cider apples, and they do live up to their reputation as spitters. The old cider apples are not much to look at, either. The do make astonishingly good cider. Yum.
My favorite is Wandering Aengus from Salem. They make both single variety and "everything in the barrel together" ciders. They are big, bold ciders - no wimpy apple juice with a kick. A little hard to find, since they sell out everything they make. I like 2-Towns as well. Have been known to DIY cider in my frig.
Cheers, katmendeux, too early this morning for cider here -- maybe later...
