Hi all, I live in NC and planted a small apple orchard lasy November. I decided to add a few sour cherry trees here in the last few weeks and contacted the local ag office to see what they thought about that. They said that its not a good idea b/c the cherries "are good host plants for several disease and insect problems".
Has anyone heard of this? If you have cherry trees growing with your apple trees I'd like to hear about your experience.
Maybe they meant that the cherry tree will require a different spray regimen and you shouldn't put them so close together that you'll get your cherry spray on the apples and vice versa?
Otherwise I can't think of why they would have warned you off of growing cherries near apple.
I saw your post on Gardenweb where folks also seem to be stumped.
you might try asking this question on the NAFEX list serve (http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailm.....info/nafex - you have to sign up to start getting the emails) - lots more members on your coast, with similar bug/disease problems. the trouble with Home Orchard Society is most of us are in the pacific northwest, an area shunned, thankfully, by many bugs and diseases...
good luck!
