Carpool to Scion Exchange (I guess not.)

Hi,

I am still looking for a ride to the Scion Exchange from North Portland, or somewhere somewhat mutually convenient. In order to get there by Trimet, I would take three buses, leaving at 7:13 to arrive at 8:58 AM. And I would still be two miles from the event location, so I would be limited to the plants I could carry while biking.

I am considering joining Flexcar, but this is not ideal for me, because then I would be not be able to stay at the event for very long, since the rates are charged by the hour. I always have helped at the event, but I am unwilling to pay $8 an hour in order to volunteer at the event.

I am very dissappointed that the Home Orchard Society and its members don't seem willing to support those of us who are trying to reduce car use by not owning a car. I'd hoped to rejoin the club, but the events are rarely convenient to public transportation. I would expect that quite a few of the members should remember me and my previous contributions to the club as a volunteer, but not one of you replied to my previous post.

I will instead seek out organizations and people who support conservation,

Mary Megrant

Hi Mary,

I understand your frustration of trying to get to the event. Just remember that less than 10% of HOS members actively read the forums (though I'm trying to change that). If you want, I'll write the board, and see if anyone knows of someone who lives in your area who would be willing to carpool.

You bring up a good point that public transportation should be considered when choosing an event location. I'm sure it probably has been in considered in the past, but I'll try to remind everyone of it next time we choose a location.

Thanks Steven,

I understand that there are many things that go into the selection of a venue. Also, many of the members live in rural areas, and so they can't relate to this issue, because they need a car for all of their activities. But it is frustrating. At one point, I wanted to start an urban chapter to specifically address the issues of growing in a small space, but I just didn't have the energy to follow through on it. This was quite a few years ago.

Anyway, I am glad that my rant got some response, as I was feeling that I was just being totally snubbed.

Thanks,
Mary Megrant

Mary, I considered your original request... I know of only one member living in N. Portland, and he, like me - will be arriving very early to finish grafting our "make-a-tree" orders. He will also be grafting along side me for the duration, and likely heading off to eat with the gang afterwards. For us, it's a very long day...

I'm sorry no other members have responded, but like Steven pointed out, too few view our forum... Many of our members are older than myself, and like those my parent’s age, leery, if unfamiliar with "The Internet." One reason for my persistent posting is to cultivate a younger group of HOS Members; and, I always encourage all our members to contribute here.

Can you imagine the commute 'some of us' make.. I'd have to drive to Hillsboro (find a safe place to park), take MAX to downtown Portland (figure out where the busses have been moved), take the correct bus to Milwaukie and likely hike that two miles pulling my wagon of grafting supplies to a school I've never seen... I've 'griped' for several years that we get this event back to the "West side"... but in the case of the HOS - beggars can't be choosers... We can no longer (because of National Security concerns) use our national guard armories, and since we haven't the funds to rent the Convention Center, generally look for a public entity, like a school, fair complex, or even a private location like Portland Nursery so we can affordably continue this event.

My first volunteer 'benchgraft' customer at this event (at least 8 years ago) was a woman who’d driven up from south of Eugene... I've had 'customers' from the north & south coast, Washington (state), and Eastern Oregon. Rambling, aren’t I..? Well, I hope you remain a member, and continue posting (rants included)... I think we're gaining!

Hi Mary,

A friend and I will be going to the scion exchange from NE Portland, and may be driving and have space for another person. Please email me at scrub@corrupt.net if you are still wanting to go, and we'll see if we can make it work out! We plan to get there at 10 sharp or a bit early, and not to stay for too long (maybe an hour or so).
