Burying wormy apples

In his gardening column a couple of weeks ago, Vern Nelson talked about burying wormy apples six inches deep. Do you think that's enough to stop the worms from procreating and coming back to haunt the apple tree again?

It sounds deep enough to me, I don't thin codling moth would survive that far under ground. Apple maggots now I don't know, seems like I heard somewhere that they overwinter in the ground but not that deep. Vern usually knows what he's talking about.
