I've got a mayhaw tree which won't make any fruit, so I was wondering if apple would be compatible with it. I've never heard of someone trying before. If not, would pear be compatible?

I'm in Louisiana btw.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure mayhaw is actually a viburnum - not a hawthorn. Grafting an apple to a hawthorn is "possible" but I wouldn't call it likely. Crabapple to hawthorn would be a better bet, but even that is very iffy.

Well there you go - shows what I know (or don't)

I have heard of people successfully grafting apple onto hawthorn, but I don't know if it is likely to take with any particular combo. You might try Winter Banana, which seems a great interstem with many combinations.

I have a Haralson on weedy hawthorn that gave exactly one fruit last fall. 2 seeds inside too, no telling what pollinated it.

Graft union on this thing is very ugly, do not expect it to live forever.

It has been on maybe 5 years or so.
