Wynooche Apple Flavor?

I have grafted an Early Wynooche apple and had high hope for being one or our two main apples. That is until I found some at the farmers market and tasted them. They were awful! A little soft and flavor was just not good. I'll eat almost any apple, but these were not good enough. My wife and son also didn't like them.

Has anybody tried this apple with different results? I hate to wait 3 years for an apple and find out I dont even like it. The reason I selected this apple is because it is early, disease resistant, keeps well, and was supposed to taste good. Anyone with experience here?

This apple was tasted a few weeks ago, and was likely harvest two months ago, so flavor could have been affected by storage.

Growing conditions and harvest method can also affect eating quality.

Don't despair. I don't remember tasting Wynooche Early apples.

But no matter how good when fresh, most early apples are very poor keepers and wouldn't be worth eating after a couple of months in storage.

The Wynooche Early apple is a wonderful tasting apple if picked at the right time. It also stores well in the refrigerator. If you got a soft one I would say it was over ripe and/or stored poorly. Any apple will taste poorly if overripe and soft. Don't give up on this apple. It is a great early apple.Just pick, store and market it at the right time, not when it is past it's prime.

It's risky to judge an apple by what you can buy in the market. Just because it was a farmer's market does not guarantee that it didn't come from the same wholesaler as supplies the supermarkets.

I've got several that are wonderful when grown at home and picked at the right time, yet just aren't very interesting when bought at the store.

I have Wynoochee Early grafted in one of my apple trees. They ripen at the end of August on my tree. I thought they tasted fine and had crisp texture this year.

Thanks for the replies and first hand accounts of Wynooche apple flavor. The few reviews I had found online indicated very good flavor, so I'm glad to hear others have found this to be true. Perhaps it was picked too late or the farmer did not refrigerate at all. I will keep the tree, with high expectations.

Some knowledgeable person told me that this apple was originally from Minnesota, but the tree name comes from near a logging camp in Washington. Interesting if true.

Wynooche is a wonderful apple. I ate and juiced many this past fall. My tasting notes: "banana flavor!, sweet, soft, juicy, thin pale green skin".

Yes, the most striking thing about it to me was that it tasted a little like banana. Very juicy and made a good sweet cider. Probably not good for hard cider though as it's only about 8 Brix, and low acid.

The tree does come from Western Washington.
