Today, May 10, we notice leaf damage on our Golden Delicious apple tree and found a whitish worm inside the brand new curled leaves at the branch tips. We found several more, a couple of them a very light green.
A picture is attached of one of the whitish ones.
What is this pest and how do we eradicate it?
All help appreciated.
Looks like an Omniverous Leaf Tier (tie-er). They tie leaves around themselves with silk for protection and feed on the leaf. They usually just do a little cosmetic damage. They are the larva of a small gray moth and as such are vulnerable to stuff like Bacillus thurengiensis, diatomaceous dust. or neem oil. If the tree is small, handpicking will get them, too.
I had clicked on your photo server and couldn’t make it out… ...but I’d have called it a “Leaf-roller†– same thing? If so, I’ve smashed them for years. I’ll see their rolled leaf and simply squish it on the stem. If I’ve got the time I’ll unravel it, usually not. Sometimes (later in their season I suspect) they’ll bail out if you tip the leaf – good riddance I figure " title="Wink" />
