Greetings,
I am getting ready to mulch in some Hazelnuts, Cornus Mas, apples, etc. and wanted to check if people have a favorite winter mulch?
I was wondering if you felt a dosage of compost would make things want to leaf out?
I'm planning to put a couple gallons of compost, a sprinkle of kelp dust and 6" deep ring of leafs around each tree. Sound good?
Thanks,
warren
In my mind, compost is too expensive in both time and $ for mulch. I use a combo of newspaper and leaves, which are readily available to me. Newspaper by itself would blow away, but cover it with leaves and they both stay wet, heavy and in place. Make sure to keep it 6'' away from the trunk of trees, so voles don't eat your tree trunks in winter.
