I'm looking to add one small sweet cherry tree to my flat back yard near the Willamette River south of Portland. Any suggestions of varieties that will do well?

I looked at the Raintree catalog and was considering Lapins, Sweetheart or Tehranivee. Any votes for or against any of these?

Thanks for any comments.

I have Lapins and Sweethearts iin my orchard near Salem, and both are good eating cherries. The Lapins are larger and mature earlier than Sweethearts. The sweethearts are a bit more disease resistant. Don't know anything about Tehranivee

I think the big issue on sweet cherries is not whether you can grow them, (they're not super hard), but how many YOU will get. Birds get most of them, and if you have a large tree, it's hard to protect them. I prefer pie cherries, but if I liked sweet cherries, I'd get as small a tree as I can, and net them.

Or prune them to a bush shape. Ted describes how to do that at the pruning classes.
