Today was my first frost. I would have had to scrape my windshield but I was a rider in the carpool. I will be seeing what tomatoes I can save. How does the cool weather effect pears, plums and apples? I am assuming pick the pears as soon as possibole and the plums and just keep watch on the apples?

You would think I am in the mountains, but I am at about 80 feet elevation within a mile of Interstate 5 in Washington state.

I think pears are slightly tricky in general, but I may have a handle on it now. You want to pick them just when they stop being rock hard, but way before they're soft enough to eat. When you can feel they have softened just a bit, lift them on the stem. When they break off naturally, bring them inside. Put them in a bag with a banana or other fruit and check on them. That's for European pears. Asian pears are better crisp.

Apples are tough. I find they fall off or come off on the stem lifting as well. I only have Japanese plums, so mine are done in the summer.
