I cut down some cottonwood trees yesterday (4/2) to make more room for my English walnut, butternut, and heartnut trees but wouldn't you know it, one tree limb fell on my three year old Cooks Giant walnut and broke it off right at the graft. I'm hoping there is one node that the Cooks might grow back from. I cut up the tree top and put in my fridge to save the scion for grafting but haven't grafted walnut before. I have some black walnut seedlings to try to salvage the scion to. When is the best time to graft walnut and what method works best? I've grafted lots of apples and pears as well as cherries and plums but haven't had success with peach or grapes. Anyone have experience with walnuts? I've read that it needs to be 80 F for good grafting success, not likely to happen here in Puyallup WA.
