Perhaps I'm a little slow off the mark here, but I thought the following worth posting for other likeminded, slow-wits. I have the strong impression that U.P. Hedrick, esteemed author of the essential "Apples of New York", "Pears of New York" etc. got his start where? As a botanist/horticulturist with the Oregon Experimental Station. Here's the full text online, of "Prunes, apples, and pears in Oregon" by U.P. Hedrick, published in February of 1896.

Well, of course, he had to cut his teeth where it counts!
