Greetings
I am a newbie as far as gardening goes. I purchased a few Bare Root trees by mail order. I planted them as per instructions. I am just wondering how long it would take for these trees (actually they appear to be sticks) to show some kind of life - such as leaves.
I did not add any fertilizer as the instructions recommended that nothing should be added (not even topsoil bought at a Home Depot).
Thanks in advance.
Hmmm, 2nd attempt at a reply. Not sure where the other one went.
Welcome to gardening and the HOS forums!
How long it takes a tree to leaf out after planting can depend on a few things. Since you received the tree mail order you might not know if it was kept in a deep dormancy in cold storage. If so, I have seen it take 2 months or more to break buds. Do not worry about not fertilizing. You want to establish a good root system before you get the top growing too fast. All you can do is, as I call it, 'hurry up and wait'. That's what I do every time I plant a tree or do a graft! I watch it daily. I have seen it be in July that some of my newly planted trees to show signs of life. And if the tree is a persimmon, mine took until late September. I was about to cut it down!
Just make sure to keep it watered. Many people think that it doesn't need water because it has no leaves. It doesn't need as much water but it still needs moisture. It doesn't have an established root system to get its own, so you have to help it. Just don't over do the water.
Oh and since you are just beginning, one thing I wish I would have been better at is keeping notes, a jounal or whatever you want to call it. You will want to right down everything. What variety is the tree, what rootstock is it on, when did it leaf out, when does it bloom. You also want to find out if it needs a pollinizer, and if so, is there one close by. It sounds like alot of trouble but its not really as long as you get a good start. You will wonder in a couple years about some things and if its written down, you will be happier.
I just noticed your post about having a lawn sprinkling system. You should do some research on this because as far as I know that is the wrong kind of watering for a fruit tree...which doesn't need frequent shallow watering (like a lawn does) but wants occasional deep watering so the roots can develop and spread deeply.
