Correct date of AAFS is: October 15 and 16, 2012, at Canby at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, Main Pavilion, hours 10 AM to 4 PM both days.

Sounds great, is there any cost to this event?

How many hours should I allocate for the show? Is it best attended both days? Or is it a whole weekend affair simply for increased foot traffic?
I want my wife to join me, but don't know what to tell her as far as the time commitment.

Thanks,
Asa

I think it costs $4 for members, $6 for non-members. There will be speakers, so many people decide to go on the Saturday or Sunday when the speakers most intrigue them. This is usually the largest display of fruit in North America. There are typically 600 varieties of apples, 150 varieties of pears, and many varieties of other fruits to try. The main idea is to try many different varieties of fruit, to decide which ones you will want to graft into your trees the next Spring. Of course you can also order extremely inexpensive trees, for $12, of combinations of rootstock and variety that will exactly fit your favorite fruit with the kind of rootstock that fits the space at your home. These trees can be picked up in the Fall. It's one of the biggest events of the year for the Home Orchard Society. As such, you can find out about all the different educational programs and activities that the society runs throughout the year. You can have your apples ID'd if you don't know what variety, you can have a group of experts answer your questions, you can get advice about grafting or growing varieties or problems in the garden.

I would probably allocate 2-4 hours for the event, depending on your patience, interest, and other time committments.

I ordered a couple of trees at the show today, but I'm not real clear when and where to pick them up? I think the lady said they would have them at the Scion Exchange event - do you know when and where that will be?

This was my first visit to any HOS event, I really enjoyed it!

Thanks,

The scion exchange/Fruit Propagation Fair is usually in the first week of March. Usually the first Saturday in March. A very good time to plant trees, as is now.

I thought the AAFS was great too. Lots of enthusiastic folks. I tried several new apples and pears and some old ones too. Saw lots of familiar faces.
