Does anyone know when the optimal time is for Kansas? June, July or August. I haven't ordered any scionwood ( spring order was dropped by supplier) yet but have all my rootstocks planted. Really don't want to lose this whole growing season.

Hi Kansas
Budding is a type of grafting best done when the rootstock is actively growing. Prep. the rootstock by adding a little fertilizer and much water 2-3 weeks before budding. This will give what some call slip bark (cambium is actively growing).

Collect "budwood" from this current seasons growth, not water sprouts, but those near the top of the tree. Budwood should be about the diameter of a pencil and removethe week tip of the stem. Where each leaf originates is a lateral bud that will become your tree. I assume you know how to remove the bud from the budwood. Just make sure you leave the petiole (leaf "handle) attached to the bud. When the two grow together the petiole will fall off and let you know that you were successful.

Timing - this is hypothesis on my part (guess) since it gets cold in KA do your budding at least 2 months before your first frost. This will give the bud and stem a chance to get connected (grow together).

Best of Budding
Ted
