I don't think I'm ready to cut scions yet.  Things appear to be dormant, but it hasn't gotten really cold yet.  I wonder if it will.

The Home Orchard Education Center is having a sale on scions. If you buy a lot it's a great deal.   You can also drive over and pick them up.  Check it out:

GRIN/USDA/Clonal Germplasm repository in Corvallis is having their day of cutting scions with the Agrarian Sharing Network, so they must think it's an ok time to cut scions.  I think they cut pear scions today. They're a bunch of full time professional orchardists with Phd's so they're a lot smarter than I am. Probably good to go.

Agrarian Sharing Network was reminding people to take cherry and plum scions as soon as possible.  For other scions, it's not so urgent. It's supposed to be quite cold this week in the PNW.  I took Surefire cherry scions today. Thanks to extra biochar, it's the first time that it's grown enough to take scions.

John,

Glad you were able to hook up with the Agrarian sharing network. I tried to hook up with them for many years and I finally gave up.  They seemed very insular to me, they saw they want to hear from new people , but really they don't. Its basically a private club until they do the scion sales.

I worked with Chris Homanics and Nick Routledge at the HOS shows.  I mostly just read their web site.  Eugene is too far for me to go to things.  They have good information.  Sorry to hear that they weren't really very welcoming.  I think we were, when HOS had in person shows.  We just didn't have enough volunteers.

I went out to cut more scion today.   The advice from Agrarian Sharing NEtwork is spot on.  The cherries looked already plumped up and ready to bloom soon.  I cut them anyway.  Some were over the fence.  I also think that if your tree is fully grown, and you will want some good bud sticks for this summer, they will more likely have some good new growth if you prune it somewhat.

I also noticed that my Hollywood plums were plumped up and a few were even showing pink, but not opened yet.  Feb 1st!

I cut some Asian pear scions too.  MOst looked ok, but a few looked like they had plumped up too, so maybe better get going if that's what you're going to do.

Yes. A lot of trees are either breaking leaf or blooming flowers down this way already. Still expecting one more freeze though.

One Green World is having a scion sale this weekend. $10 admission.

John S
PDX OR

Check it out:

OGW Scion Sale!
Come join us in-person for our first ever scion sale this weekend February 22-23rd! Before the Home Orchard Society concluded its operations we would always attend the annual scion exchange at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, where people from all over the state would bring scion wood of their favorite varieties to share with other growers.

This event will not be nearly the size of those scion exchanges and it will primarily be One Green World providing the scion wood and selling rootstock. There will be limited buckets for others to bring scion to share, but feel no need as OGW will be the primary providers of the scion wood. We are hopeful to start a new tradition and help people grow more fruit!

Inventory will be split between Saturday and Sunday so availability will be the same for both days! Scion will be limited per person by variety to ensure equal opportunity for all attendees. Please be considerate of your fellow growers! Varieties will primarily include apples, pears, plums, cherries, peaches, nectarines, a *small* number of fig varieties, quince, medlar and mulberry. Your ticket will grant you access to all scion for the day!

Find all upcoming OGW Events HERE!

How to Attend
1. Purchase a ticket for your preferred day, Saturday 22nd or Sunday 23rd
2. Your $10 ticket provides you unlimited access to all scion for the day.
3. Please bring:
-Your own ziploc bags for storing scion
-Masking tape and sharpie for writing down varietal names.
4. Gates will be open 10am-5pm Saturday and Sunday
5. Parking: our parking lot is limited, please review our parking information section below.
6. Rootstock will be available for purchase in-store or for pickup from pre-orders.

Exciting.  Thanks for posting John, I didn't know about it, and I've been wanting to got to OGW anyway.

I'm planning to go Saturday morning.  Hopefully they'll have a Autumn Beauty jujube, or another I can use to graft it to.

Let me know if you can or can point me in the direction of someone that can assist me with this.

John, Thanks for the heads up.

I took my wife and arrived just before 10AM today.  There were just a few people ahead of us and a handful more arrived before 10 when they opened the gate.  The area and selection was small compared to the HOS events, maybe 50 linear feat of table, but the quality of the scions were excellent and there were loquats, goumi, jujube and stuff not just apples and pears.

As for trees, the one gallon  feijoa, especially the New Zealand varieties looked bigger and better than the last two years.  I got a GA 866 bare root.  Over 5 feet tall with maybe 5/8" caliper.  Nice looking tree.  Now I have something to graft my Autumn Beauty to that itself is supposed to be good and early ripening.  I also grabbed a 1 gallon loquat that looks a lot better than the one I tried 2 years ago.

On the way back we stopped for lunch at Portland Teriyaki and Nepali Cafe.  I highly recommend the momo dumplings.  Don't be fooled by the name, the Nepali recipes aren't fusion or anything like that.

The weather was beautiful, but of course it started raining shortly after we got OneGreenWorldScion2025-1.pnghome.

Good info. I was wondering how it would go.  I'm focusing on other varieties this spring, but it's nice to now about it, in case.

I'm guessing those are notes about their plantings.  "also in" probably means in addition to the primary plot, they also have a tree in another area.  I'm guessing that edible land refers to an edible landscaping planting, rather than the nursery.
