Dear Friends,

Does any of you know whether the Orin apple scion wood would be available at the exchange? The Orin apple is a very popular variety originated from Japan that was crosssed between Golden Delicious and Indo. Thanks!

KK, I'm not sure about the availability of the Orin at the upcoming Scion Exchange... But I was curious enough to 'search it.' Here's a photo: http://www.bctree.com/fruit/varieties/orin.htm

This discription got me wondering: "The Sweet Orin is an exciting new and unique apple variety from Japan, where it is considered a true delicacy." Often times new, and popular apples have Plant Patents, whereas we're not supposed to 'share' them...

Searching "Apple Patents," I found the following (excellant) site: http://www.allaboutapples.com/varieties/index.htm - and the following quote: "We show US Plant Patent numbers and indicate Registered Trademarks for varieties that have them. We urge you to respect the arm of the apple industry that brings us our great new varieties. It is illegal to propagate patented varieties without permission of the patent holder." Soooo, I checked out the Orin and did not find a patent number among their information.

This isn't getting you any closer to your desired wood is it :? ... but at least sharing it appears to be 'legal.' Usually the only solid info we have on what's come to the Scion (Fruit & Berry Cutting) Exchange is after-the-fact - and the list is impressive! You may just have to come to the gathering - and perhaps hang around, as it's all donated by members many varieties arrive as they do.... And other than 'light setting,' and 'tip baring,' it sounds like a good apple - good luck.
