THINK SPRING: Orchard Care Seminar

On Saturday, January 19, 2013 we have planned another great seminar this year to sweep away the cobwebs of winter and launch your mind into spring. A four-speaker forum starts at 9 AM and runs until 1:00 PM. Join HOS and other local home orchardists to socialize, trade notes, and learn something new for the coming year. Our Publications Chairperson, Jodi Gurtov, will have a table full of useful books for sale to further enhance your ability to plan, select, plant and grow a satisfying and successful edible landscape. 9 AM - Glen Andreson: Flowers that Flirt - Planting for Pollinators
The host of KBOO's "Dirt Bag" radio show, Glen is a passionate gardener and beekeeper. He will share his knowledge of garden planning and plants that encourage pollinators to visit, feed and survive in your backyard! By increasing the habitat for pollinators and beneficial bugs in your garden, you will increase your yields of fruit, veggies, and berries throughout the growing season!

10 AM Jim Oliphant: Growing Small Fruits + Grapes
Join the Small Fruit Specialist from the USDA-NCGR Repository in Corvallis to learn the ins and outs of berry- and grape-growing. Jim will talk about propagating, fertility, planting and harvest, plus recommend successful varieties for the home garden in the PNW.

11 AM Todd Birzer: Online Tools for Better Spray Scheduling
Todd is an amateur fruit grower, like us, and spent a lot of time figuring out how to track the emergence of codling moth larvae in the spring and summer, using online weather data and free computer models. By linking your spray schedule to local weather and pest emergence, spray applications are maximized and effective. He will guide us through the online process, and talk about the organic spray he uses to control the codling moth larvae.

12 PM HOS Panel: Question and Answer session
Submit your fruit growing questions during the first two hours of our seminar, and the HOS experts will gather to discuss the answers and techniques for the benefit of everyone!
