After only a month and a half, my plant tag is already gone. I grafted a Gravenstein onto whatever was the most dwarfing rootstock available that day, intending to keep it hobbled in a pot unless one of my in-ground infants dies.
Considering how big a 50%-size Gravenstein wants to be, unless just being in a pot stunts it severely, I'll be pruning it aggressively in a couple of years.
My vague recollection is that the most dwarfing I was able get was M.26. Karen, Viron, anyone else who was there that day, do you remember which rootstocks were available? Does anyone know if those scions were from a notably good tree?
I've got the replacement aluminum tag half filled out already...
Yikes! High winds? …I didn’t pay too close attention to the rootstock lineup during the classes… I’d suggest an e to Joanie Cooper (address on back page of your Pome News). Between her and Karen you’d likely get a better guess than mine…
I’m glad to read someone’s not afraid of a Gravenstein in close quarters… Just don’t let the scion root
Oh, I'm just too wide-eyed innocent/ignorant to be properly afraid of a Gravenstein. I've got the information intellectually, but my gut doesn't understand it yet .
Dunno how windy it has to be to defeat a plastic tie, but it's been at least that blustery. Might be a good idea to peg the tag into the dirt with what someone in a drier area might use as a divining rod - big forked stick. We don't have to search for water around here.
