Will excess root stocks from the scion exchange be available at the arboretum afterwards again this year?

I'm afraid I'll be in China during the scion exchange and I've just recently bought a house with 2.5 acres aching to be filled with fruit trees.

Now how you gonna put together all those trees in China …let alone collect all the scion wood you’re gonna want/need? With all that potential, you must have some grand plans! And don’t make us have to send over the Statehouse representative’s to get you out of some Chinese prison after getting caught attempting to smuggle out scions and cuttings 8) …though ya know we ‘wood.’ Going anywhere near the Chang Bai Mountain region..? If so, let me place an order for some ‘Mountain 3’s & 5’s <img decoding=" title="Wink" />

Seriously, I don’t know about the excess rootstock (not my department), but there was obviously an abundance of it last year. I’d hate to see folks avoiding it at the exchange …while looking to pick it up cheap at the Arboretum afterwards …though if that’s your plan, I won’t tell. But like I said, you must have some incredible plans for establishing that new orchard – keep us posted!

I think the simple answer, since there may be none left over or an awful lot of what you don't want, is to reserve/buy rootstock ahead of time. You should be able to set something up with the arboretum directly.

I am sure that the intention is to balance supply and demand so that everyone who wants rootstock gets it and there is not even a single rootstock left at closing.

It wouldn't surprise me if the order was reduced slightly this year because there was too much left unsold last year.

Let me point out that rootstock isn't all that expensive and there are other places to purchase it if you miss out on the scion exchange.

If you are going to be back shortly after the exchange, then it is probably possible to make arrangements to pre-order and have the rootstock held for you. They did get a really nice assortment of rootstock last year.

Thanks for the responses. I don't have a lot of specific plans yet. I'll be occupied getting the house itself in order for some time.

I was thinking I might like to set aside a small area as a nursery to start some trees pending figuring out where I'll put them. I already have 3 pineapple guavas that I need to figure out where to put.

There are at least 20 fruit trees already on the property. Unfortunately the planning that went into them looks to have been very poor. Most of them are planted on top of the septic drainfield for the property. Then many of the ones that aren't appear to be peaches and nectarines :( I did get to sample a couple of tasty peaches this summer before the place was officially ours, but I don't hold high hopes for consistant or long-lived cropping.

When I get things a little more straightened out I'll have to invite the HOS over to give me opinions. It's a bit out of the way for most though being out in Camas. Its a 30 minute drive from PDX airport.
