Hey Scion Exchange Volunteers,
I had an apple scion grafted to M9 rootstock last year at the Scion Exchange. The graft didn't take, but the rootstock is still alive. I'd like to use the rootstock again to save a little $. Can I just dig it up and bring it to this next scion exchange to be grafted again? I'd try grafting it myself, but it's a bit bigger around than most of the scions will be and I don't know if I could do one of those more advanced grafts to get a good connection. I want to move it to another location anyways. I just wanted to check and see if I'm allowed to bring it in to be grafted or if the grafters will only do rootstock purchased at the exchange.
Thanks!
Jerilee

Jerilee, I’m planning on grafting at the exchange so bring it in we’ll do a postmortem with the ‘who done it’ questions in person
It sounds like a candidate for a cleft graft, though whip & tongue grafts work pretty good up to a point. Actually the whip & tongue is the superior of the two, so if you could find a big fat piece of scion wood of something you want - that would work. I’ve suggested folks head back to the scion tables and find a larger piece and they’ve come back with a different variety because it was bigger. Don’t do that - if you want a certain variety, we can make about anything work (most of the time). In fact, a couple of small scions would work best for a cleft graft. So snag your wood first then get in line.
Although you may still be asked for admission at the door, the scion wood would be ‘free’ - and tell them ‘Viron’ said you’re due a free repair then find me, same weird name as here. Actually, my favorite grafts have been just what you’re asking, with many folks over the years having asked something similar on this forum. I cut my teeth on top-working way before bench grafting so begin to salivate when I see a real tree in line
