Do you prune it back as soon as you see it or wait till the tree starts budding? Sometimes it can be hard to tell if it is just discolored or is dead for me. Thanks.

I think that waiting until you think the last bouts of very cold harming freezes would be is a good idea. When that is, I cannot precisely tell you.

…I’ll prune it out when I find it, often with a fine toothed saw so as to make a smoother, more controled cut. And no need to paint it with anything, just stay outside the branch collar where it meets the limb and there shouldn’t be any problems with disease.
