Before the pandemic I had ambitions to digitize the Pome News newsletters from the Home Orchard Society. I have a box of Pome News dating from mid 90s to the final years. Then the COVID pandemic came, I developed other health problems, and my scanner died.
Now I’m downsizing and need to prioritize what I keep. Plus they don’t help anyone just sitting here in a box, unread.
If anyone local wants these, I’d be happy to give them to you. I think they are a treasure trove of experience and fruit growing history. They are very interesting reading. You will have to come get them. I am in Battle Ground, 30min from downtown Vancouver. Or, sometimes I'm in the Salmon Creek area. Please let me know if you want them.
If there is any sort of archive for this sort of thing, that would also be ideal.
I have myself all setup with news publishing software and the correct kind of scanner for it as far as getting it all into digits again. I'm not sure if you have a good way but if you release them to me we can have a conversation about it and compare.
We miss you around here. One of many favorite contributions that I remember about you (Daniel?) is how many leafs it takes from an apple seed before it's capable of producing it's first flower. If you might remember anything about me it might be my willingness to share seeds of an apricot which bears very nicely. I just transferred about 100 from one bin to the other and they will start cold-strat this week in the cooling chest around back.
Publishing all that won't even start until after Christmas or so at best.
I'm trying to gain a consensus from those that have either written articles in Pome News or from any donors this past year.
I happened to have the fall quarter for year 2017. I ended up practicing with it and gathered up about 28 image files that combine two pages into one. I still need to get these translated using cloud software by Google Docs. That's assuming there's consent to digitize this all the way into characters that can be copied by anybody's PCs. So that consent is one question?
One of the things that I suppose that should be done is span these uploads so that only a certain number of them can be seen via the internet in any one years rate or duration of time?
I'm not a marketer, my expertise is mainly designing of readable materials since having worked with my father who had lots of experience designing building blueprints. This gives me a head start knowing where to put these on our boards and also how to list pages so that they compete well with other magazines that I see being put out and uploaded for review these days. If anyone has any questions regarding what I propose as far as the .html file layouts or designs of these please PM me before I commit to the final forms or decisions. Part of what I have seen used is white text between paragraphs that make it really hard for AI through PCs to move all this around. I would certainly make permalinks operate within at a spacing of about 6 per page.
I think html can be converted into PDF files and still be in keeping with the integrity of the permalinks.
Hey Rooney,
That sounds like a nice thing that you are doing. I wrote more articles for the Pome News during its last 10 years than anyone else, and I certainly give whatever permission I could give, if I understand your post correctly. I don't imagine that others would have a problem with it. They're not all alive.
