Hi everyone -
In trying to keep the Pome News publication relevant for our members (you!), i wonder if we can make this an ongoing thread -
please post your topic requests; links to articles, photos, and blogs; questions in need of answers; essays you've written about fruit growing; etc - anything to help guide me as i put together the Pome News each quarter.
(for example, i will be trying to find some good info about anthracnose to include in the upcoming spring 2012 issue!)
the more folks contribute, the better and more relevant the Pome News will be!
thank you in advance,
karen tillou, Pome News editor
I'd love to see an illustrated glossary of terms used in apple identification. I often read descriptions of apples and I find them difficult to follow. I try to guess what some of the terms mean.
Perhaps that could accompany an article on the process of apple identification that our experts use for the HOS.
Karen, until I saw your post I forgot that I wanted to cheer after I received the latest Pome News. Vastly improved graphically and in every way. So thank you. I had tended to let my membership lapse because it didn't make any difference whether I was a member or not - I got in free to the Scion Exchange and All About Fruit shows because I volunteer, and the Pome News didn't seem to offer me much. You've changed that, so thanks again.

A few ideas:
- understory management (eg, pros & cons of mowing vs not mowing, pros & cons of mowing at different times of year vs others, pros & cons of maintaining a shrub layer vs not, nitrogen fixers, nutrient accumulators, beneficial attractors, etc.)
- harvest timing, the pros & cons of different methods of determining when to pick the dang fruit! differences in timing for storage, for preserving, for fresh eating, for market, etc.
- pear storage & ripening
- uncommon & unusual (or less common & less usual) fruit culture, harvest, handling, etc.
- pros & cons of different trellis systems
- mayonnaise, the orchard and you: will increasing fat intake positively or negatively influence the productivity of orchard managers?
Also:
Have there been any discussions about digitally archiving and posting (in some sort of members only part of the website) past issues? Seems all you'd need would be for HOS to spring for a decent scanner (maybe some software) & recruit some plucky volunteer(s) to start scanning.
