Hi folks,
I've gotten excited about asian persimmons in the last year, so I came to the Scion Exchange on Saturday looking for some grafting wood. Unfortunately, selection was rather limited (or ran out before I got there). I purchased some rootstock anyway, hoping that I could still find some scion wood this spring or summer for grafting or budding.
I've thought that scion wood could still be collected for Asian persimmon now after reading that they take a long time to break dormancy. If this is still a possibility, is there anyone here that has a tree in the portland area and would be willing to share a few pieces of wood? I'm looking for Izu and jiro/fuyu or any other variety that comes recommended for NW Oregon (I'm most interested in non-astringent types). I did find a few sticks of Saijo at the exchange which I'll be grafting when the rootsocks start to come out of dormancy later this spring.
If there's consensus that now is too late for collecting scion, can persimmons be bud grafted in the summer?
thanks,
chris

I didn't see the persimmon root stock this year but normally it's really small. You might be better to grow it for a year. 1/8" dia. root stock has a much lower success rate than grafting 1/4" stuff. Trying to bud a 1/8" rootstock is also pretty sketchy unless you are a neurosurgeon in your day job...
I have grafted persimmons in years past. Yes, I have waited till the plant is leafed out, like late June or even early July.
I will have to go home and check but I think my Izo died back to the graft a couple of years ago. I top worked the root stock last year and it seem to have taken. I have Early Fuyu, Fuyu, Jiro and a couple of others in that row. I have not looked at them in the last week or two to see if they have bud swell yet but I doubt it.
If you are just looking for a scion for a plant or two, I might be able to help you.
Drop me an email directly.
Thanks
Chris
