Yesterday I was at the One Green World outlet on Foster in Portland. They had some nice end-of-season items. I thought it might be a good idea to buy something for fall planting.
Theyn had a nice selection of container persimmons. These were Nikita's Gift, one foot tall, and several had fruit. One had 2 fruits.
The persimmons were nice size. My Nikita's Gift is about 6 foot tall, bloomed this year, set a couple of fruits that fell off. So I haven't tried it yet.
I asked what they do to get them to fruit at such a small size, but the guy who I spoke to didn't know.
They also had some Fire Crystal™ persimmons with set fruit, but the fruits were green and only about 1 cm diameter. Those are described as originating in Xian.
I bought a Prairie Star™ persimmon tree, thinking that maybe buying one in the fall would give me a head start over Spring. About 18 inches tall. It had a nice fibrous root system, leading me to think it might be on D. lotus rootstock, but they didn't know. This variety is reported as a most likely self pollinating, seedless, Claypool variety.
Here is my Nikita's Gift this week. Nice leaf color.
Now I have 4 persimmon trees of various sizes, 18 inches to 8 foot. I hope I get to eat one of my own persimmons in my lifetime. 🙂
John, any time!
How long did it take for your persimmons to start bearing? I thought NG would last year but the little fruit dropped off. My Asian persimmons are around 3 years old, 6 to 8 foot tall. The little American ones are just beginning, but Yates had a couple of flowers at about 18 inches tall the first year.

I have two persimmons; Izu and Jiro. They took quite a while to bear fruit. My Izu started at age 14 but is now very prolific. Two years ago I was about to give up and yank out the Jiro. No fruit after 17 years! I actually told that tree out loud that I was going to get out the chainsaw come spring if there was no fruit yet again. The threat was all it took. The tree was loaded with fruit in its 18th year. I swear that I changed nothing: watering the same and pruning lightly the same as always. I am no mistic, I don't believe in astrology, and I'm pretty sure that trees are just plants. Yet somehow, after a stern rebuke, I finally have more persimmons than I can use.
