Pear Pollination Information Needed

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this forum and to growing fruit, but I joined the HOS at the All About Fruit Show and am starting to find answers to my questions. Right now I need some help figuring out pear pollination. I am trying to pick 2 pear varieties that have similar bloom periods so they can cross-pollinate each other when grafted to the same rootstock and grown in espalier.

Folks at the Home Orchard Society information table thought there was an eBook that covered this information, but I cannot find it. (The one on apples was fantastic. I need something similar for pears.) Can someone point me to a good resource for this information?

The two varieties I'm considering right now are Cascade and Beierschmidt (After spending hours tasting apples, I didn't have enough time left to taste very many pears!). Would these cross-pollinate each other?

Thank you! (I'm in Washington County, OR)

Welcome aboard!
I have heard that Winter Nelis is an outstanding pollinator. I am also interested in that question. I wish I were more help in this one.
Sorry,

I googled "pear pollination chart" and it gave back 987 results. You can have fun looking for the exact pair of pears you are attempting, or just graft a little Bartlett to one tree and a little Winter Nellis to the other tree. Both of them are pretty good pollinators.

Do pears bloom at seriously different times? All my pears bloom at the same time and they have a fairly long bloom period. It never occurred to me to worry about pollination.

In Corvallis (pear repository), where the springs are cool and mild you can see various trees in various stages of flowering. If you live where they have fairly hard winters and spring comes on all at once, the pears will bloom together. Depends on the weather, I guess you could say.

Thank you all for your input and ideas! Specific information on the varieties I wanted to plant was very hard to find, but I'm pretty confident now that Barlett will pollinate Beierschmidt, so I think I'll go with those two.
