We are looking at adding peaches to our small home orchard.

I am concerned about how much care they would take here in the Northwest so I am looking for advice on a couple varieties that would be more disease resistant for the Mulino are.

Of course taste is important as well.

Any suggestions or advice on the care and varieties?

Thank you!

They are hard to grow here. Rainy springs lead to peach leaf curl and bacterial diseases. Many have given up. I 'd like to try someday. I've heard good things about Avalon Pride.

Unfortunately, I must agree with John… I’ve gone through 5 peach trees; 4 different varieties. It took each of them about 4 years to die completely. …Perhaps my 7 fig trees have filled that ‘fruit void?’ Good luck~

I have a Frost, Avalon Pride, and Charlotte. I picked these three because of their leaf curl resistance and sequential ripening. The Frost peaches seem to ripen unevenly - one side of the peach is dead ripe and sweet while the other side of the same peach is hard and tart. My Avalon Pride was planted last year and had one peach on it this year, it was ripe before the Frost. I just planted the Charlotte this year so nothing to report yet.

I have tried several varieties with little success. Frost makes a nice fall tree and grew well but never set more than 5 peaches. I think that was because I didn't understand peaches. They need to be pruned differently. They fruit on new wood (previous years growth) so if you cut heavily on that you will not get peaches. I have a Hearken too that is a nice tree and should do well next year. I had 2 Contenders that died out the second year. I know people who grow peaches very successfully near me. It all depends on your microclimate. See if you can find someone local to see what they are growing.
