Hi Folks,

I have three peach trees growing in my home orchard.  One of them is exhibiting a clear and colorless sap like material oozing out of the location where this years new wood is growing.  I have no clue what this is.  Can some take a look and give me their take on it?  What is it and what should I do about it?

Thanks.

Peach trees are susceptible to so many diseases and insect damage it’s often near impossible to pin it down.  I went through 5 peach trees in 10 years.  Here’s my best guess, gleaned online:

Peach twig borers spend the winter as small larvae in galleries within the tree cambium.  Larvae have emerged and moved to newly expanding shoots where they bore into the tip to feed, causing the typical “shoot strikes.” They will pupate within the shoots and emerge soon as adult moths, to lay eggs on shoots.  Later generations feed on the fruit.

I’ve no idea how to deal with it...  Otherwise, the new growth looks good, so perhaps it will ‘expel the larvae’ if that’s what’s happening.

I think the clear stuff is bacterial disease. Just my guess-I'm not a trained "etymologist".  Once again this year, my peach tree looked like death after the rainiest winter ever, and then I sprayed it with fungal compost tea. Most of the diseases are fungal in nature, but as Viron says, there are a lot of diseases!  The old leaves fell off and the plant looks super healthy now, with a grand total of one peach on it. Not quite as impressive as last years 35 or so.  I didn't buy the tree. It came free through my compost, so I'm still experimentally working with it.
