I'd plant trees around it. I live in a windy area, but there's a fence around mine. I would think it would be native there. At least in Kansas. Maybe they only grow in forests with other trees around them. That's where I've found them in the wild in Indiana.

[quote="John S":hnl2dug3]Pawpaws are a completely delicious fruit, they are pest and disease free, they are great croppers, and they are the largest native American fruit. They grow great here. I don't know why more people don't grow them here. Pollination is the only trick.

I wholeheartedly agree here! AND - there is an ebay seller that will send bareroot ones that do well at a very good price. They dip them in some goop of some kind for transplant shock and has fertilizer. probably too late to try for this year (bareroot). If i had the room i would do a whole grove esp if i had some 'wet' areas.
It is critical to get GOOD SEED from a GOOD FRUIT (cultivar). Very critical. And they do rather well when direct seeded. This would be an EXCELLENT candidate for cottage industry of selling at a Farmer's Market. 100% certain of this. If you can obtain good fruit then the seed contained therein are very likely to be good seedlings. The chance few that are not good can be grafted upon.
It is also the incredible beauty of these trees that is amazing. Very tropical looking. Easy potential to have a seedling that is so good you can name it after your child or alma mater. lol
Hold out for choice / good seed. All good things in good time! UPDATE - BINGO! Think I found them again. I was told about this in CRFG mtg years ago and I think this is the one -

Then try google shopping link with this in your google search. Also click on the images that appear to be from an auction or nursery site. It is one of my best ways of fishing for neato new sources on George Bush's 'internets' (sic) " title="Wink" />
