Newly grafted apple trees

I obtained five grafted apple trees at the March Propageting Fair. They are all doing good and have began to leaf out. Both the grafted tree and the scion are leafing, do I allow this or am I suppose to rub off the scion leaf buds? I guess my question is what do I do now?

Hi lindalou,

Opinions on this differ. Here is a link to a thread that talks a bit about this.

This is my opinion. Sometimes the scions will leaf and then fade. I'd leave at least one set of leaves on the rootstock so you can keep it alive if the scions die later in the heat of summer. Hope this helps.

Greg
