Hi there
We are about to plant a new orchard in our side lot 37 ft by 14 ft, problem is, it is solid clay. From previous experience I do not want to create a series of small swimming holes when the rain comes down. However I have a plan!!!
What do you think if: I dig three large, circular holes, 4ft across and 3ft deep, to then plants four trees in each, same stock different varieties to get different harvest times. Then make a ditch 3 ft deep to join the holes and a ditch to run the water away to where we have a sink hole in another part of the garden, line this with gravel and perforated drainage tubing and bury this in the bottom to drain the tree holes.
This may seem like a lot of work, but if it works!!! What do you think , am I crazy and should I just go down to New Seasons!!!
Thanks, Michael Alexander

Not the worst idea I have ever heard! Does it get plenty of sun all day? If not, you might consider black currants or gooseberries.
Another thing to consider is raised beds using RR ties. Then the tree roots could grow into the clay at their leisure. Drainage is everything to a root.

Add organic material to the soil, too. Don't make it perfect but add enough the the microbiology has a chance against diseases and rot. Then the tree can start to send its exudates to improve the soil and the cycle can start. The soil will become better over time. Old wood, leaves, compost, etc. in the hole. I think it's a good plan. Let us know how it works. I've done similar things.
