Is anybody planning on going on that tour next weekend?
I would Looove to do it even though the morning drive is a bit daunting since I'm not a morning person. But I just had knee surgery 2 weeks ago and its probably too soon for me to be walking what I'm guessing would be a couple of miles or so during the tour.
Is this the kind of thing that HOS sponsors regularly, or is this a one time deal that I'm missing out on?
Anybody care to report back how it goes? Maybe take some pictures? Let us know how the fruit tastes and what's new
Looks like it's at the Agricultural Research Station in Corvallis. From [url:1dhdqu4s]http://www.ars.usda.gov/News/docs.htm?docid=15307[/url:1dhdqu4s]:
2007 Open HouseOn July 20 and 21 we will open our blueberry and pear field collections for the public to explore and sample the hundreds of varieties (about 400 different blueberry and nearly 1000 different pear varieties) in these "germplasm" collections. Our genebank represents world diversity of a number of different fruit and nut crops preserved as living plants either in protected potted collections or in field collections.
Repository staff will be on hand in the field to give hourly presentations on Friday afternoon and during the day on Saturday:
Friday, July 20 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, July 21 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Between presentations, visitors will be invited to roam the fields and taste the wide diversity of fruits. (In July there will be only a handful of pears that are ripe, but some of these early varieties may be of special interest.)
It sounds very interesting, but I'll be renting a U-Haul to move across town on Sunday -- don't know if I'll have the time to spare Saturday. (Friday I'll be waiting at my new house for the phone installer, refrigerator repairman, and plumber....)
Yes, the Repository is basically located within the Oregon State University research farm; think they share grounds but not collections. Thanks for the update on the open house; I'm in Corvallis and was wanting to go on the tour Sat. morning.....but was already scheduled to leave on a 3 day camping trip to the coast with my ladyfriend; and she wasn't interested enough in the tour to postpone camping 1/2 a day! So instead I'll just zip over there after I get off work at 3:30 on Friday, before the ladyfriend even gets into town:)

Well, I'd think that they'd be likely to have a Fall open house, and in fact I seem to remember seeing dates for them in the past; though I don't know for sure that they were in the Fall! But their website (Listed in an earlier post) has their phone number, could always call them. Only make sense that they'd show it off to the public when there's more than just trees growing to be shown, fruit to be tasted makes a better impression:)
