I have an Orchard Bee house in my Berry Patch in Tillamook. A lot of the Masons got wiped out by the bad weather this spring. But in the last few days I've seen new bees using the tubes and sealing them with plain mud, just like regular Masons. Only these have yellow and black striped abdomens.
Does anyone know what kind of bee this is ? Graham

I think I am getting the same sort of bee trying to get water from my watering buckets. I wondered "are those mason bees?" They certainly look similar!

I am seeing them too, up on Chehalem Mountain. But my understanding is that mason bees are all black, like a little fly.

Are they these ladies?

Or maybe these?

There are many species of Mason Bees in the family Osmia. I think the ones we are most familiar with are the Blue Orchard Mason Bee Osmia Lignaria. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osmia

Here is a gallery of bees, wasps and ants: http://www.bwars.com/Gallery.htm

I just brought my mason condo into the garage for the season because activity had apparently stopped and it seemed safer. Now I'm wondering if I'm missing a chance to foster another species.

Thanks for the pictures jafarj. What I am seeing is more black with definite stripes, more like the picture from your web site of Stelis punctulatissima. What is everyone else seeing?
