Howdy.
Got wind of the following:
"The Kubota store in Silverton ( Cascade Farm Machinery - 503-873-5355 ) just bought out all the ladders from a cherry grower that closed up. They have over 100 of the ladders, both 14 and 16 foot available, asking $100 for the 14 foot ones. Lightweight aluminum in good condition, 3 point type with the wide ( 4.5 feet ) base that curves up to about 1 foot at the top..."
Cheers.

In my opinion, Orchard ladders are a must: http://www.homeorchardsociety......rticle/36/ though 14 and 16 feet are pretty tall… the price is good. I’d stand em up with the swing-leg extending away from you; allow the leg to swing out – and as it comes back watch how close it comes to the bracket that holds it (attached to one of the rungs). That will give you an idea if it’s ever been ‘tweaked’ – or twisted (backed into or run over). When using it, you’ll need that leg to swing out straight. If it goes to either side it will be far less stable.
Also look for cracks in the aluminum frame, rungs and welds… they’re not bullet proof. And check for rust on the hardware screws; if it looks like they’ll need replacing, offer them less… at least the value of grinding them out and replacing them with stainless…
Otherwise, good spot. Though mine’s ‘only’ eight foot, it’s one of my best friends!

Well, the orchard ladders are a good deal. Although they've obviously been working ladders they're in great condition. I bought a 14' one and due to the kindness of two employees, Marvin and Chris, they took great care in getting it secured to the top of my SUV. They went way above and beyond to provide excellent customer service. If any of you out there could use an orchard ladder I'd strongly suggest you make the drive to Silverton. I'm very happy with my new purchase and can't wait to be able to use it during this year's harvest.

And another Craigslist post for cheap wooden orchard ladders in Salem, OR I'd be tempted to get a 16' one, since our longest is only 14'; but we've still got 4 or 5 and probably can get by without the extra couple of feet!!
