hi folks,
awhile ago on the old forums I asked for advice on perry pears. it was a good short discussion, and i've done a bunch more research myself. i currently have the following perry trees growing:
- brandy perry (3 year, will produce this year)
- clusters perry (3 year, will produce a bit)
- blakeney red pear (2 years)
- yellow huffcap (1 year)
- hendre huffcap (1 year)
- taynton squash (1 yr)
- butt (1 yr)
this year we went to scion exchange specifically looking for the following, in order of desire, and found none: i'm very curious if anyone has any of these?
- oldfield
- rock
- teddington green
- white bache
- moorcroft
- thorn
- normanschin
anyone? or other celebrated perry varietals?
(ps: all the foxwhelp cider scions were gone by 11a, this year too! anyone have a tree i might take a little clipping from of that? i have several cider varieties i could exchange...)
thanks, everyone!

I don't have any perry only pears.
I do have several varieties of apple that can be used for cider or dessert. That is my favorite kind of apple.
I have several varieties of pear, rather like mac macanatty, both Euro and Asian.
Apple cider blew up and has become a huge thing.
Perry hasn't quite caught on like that. I believe that it will catch on, but not quite as big as cider.
I think that the best way to get them is to go with Joanie Cooper, HOS president, down to Corvallis when they gather the scions. She has the inside connection, and you can grab several for the club and one for yourself of each variety. I think it will happen in January or February.

Hi there,
I'm joining this conversation late, but wanted to add that I'm also looking for perry pear scion wood for my grafting project this winter. I've attended the HOS scion exchange the past several years but haven't found many of the pears I'm interested in. I'm looking for the following:
Brandy, Blakeney Red, Taynton Squash, Barland, Normanischen Ciderbirne, Winnals Longdon, Gelbmostler, Theilersbirne.
I do have some (limited) pear scions to trade (Orcas, Ewart, Sumer Bloodbirn, El Dorado, Aurora, Emile d'Hyst, Columbia, Abbe Fetel, Tarusa Crimson - but I think these all can be found at the HOS scion exchange as well.
I also have several hundred young cider apple trees in the ground (mostly French/English bittersweets) and some of them might be large enough to shed a scion or two. Do let me know if anyone wants to arrange a trade, and what varieties you might be interested in.
John - I have emailed Joanie about participating in the Corvallis trip to the germplasm repository (thanks for the tip).

Hi Bunchgrasser,
Welcome to the HOS and forum. I often find that networking within HOS helps us find things. Some of the other people know I like American persimmons, pie cherries and strongly flavored apples, and they connect people to me and me to them. If I hear someone talking about obscure perry scions, I will try to remember to refer them to you on this forum.
