Is there a list of arborists that anyone can recommend to prune our fig trees?

As a ‘life member’ of this organization ...finding a professional pruner familiar with fruit trees, especially figs, eludes me…  I don’t think we have a standing list, and it’s always seemed very difficult to find anyone.

Dang, if you'd fly me out to Oregon early next spring ..I’ll prune them, for ‘free!’ Laugh I had seven fig trees, and have pruned a lot more.  Are you growing ‘one-trunk trees,’ or willing to allow a thicket, with multiple trunks?

Figs were likely the trickiest trees I’d prune, real puzzles.  And since they fruit on ‘this year's growth,’ taking off too much will leave no crop the following year.

But again, as far as professionals skilled at fruit or fig tree pruning ...good luck.  I’ve cleaned up after some very shoddy & expensive work by so called Arborists.  Ask them about ‘fine pruning’ your fruit trees, that means ‘clear out to the ends,’ not the usual chop-job, requiring 3 or 4 years to reestablish fruiting spurs and wood.

The last thing I did in Oregon before moving to Virginia this spring was prune my brother and mother’s fruit trees…  Mom’s fig, a Desert King start I’d given her, just had it’s earliest and largest figs ever, with growth to match (around 15 years old).

It’s too soon for serious pruning, though.  I’d suggest letting them store their energy, then remove what’s not needed or desired early next spring…  ...and I’m only half-joking about flying me home Wink

Hi Dianne,

Welcome to the HOS.  Most HOS members prune their own trees, and keep them at a height in which it makes sense for them to prune them.  Tonya teaches pruning classes at the arboretum.  I agree with everything Viron said about pruning. He's kind of been the pruning expert among us for a few years.  I guess if I were looking for help, I would either do a fast version or a slow version. Fast version, like Viron says, is hiring someone to do it. They might do a terrible job, and it will probably cost a lot.  The slow version is better but slow. I would try to find someone in your area that might look at it and give you a few pointers. This is probably most easily done by saying where you live, so we might try to imagine  someone we know nearby who might work with you on it.  Fast version is more certain. SLow version is better in the long run.
