I planted some seeds from a fuzzy kiwi this year in bagged potting soil. I have one healthy vine growing but I'm not sure it's a kiwi, I'm thinking the potting soil might have had weed seeds in it. The vine had tiny yellow flowers on it and now it has little cockle burr type growths on it. Anybody out there have experience with seedlings? I couldn't figure out how to post a photo.

That's a weed. Kiwi fruit vines can take 7 or more years to bear from seed and they are very large woody vines.

Kiwis in general are easy to grow from cuttings. If you know someone nearby, you can get one and even start one now. Winter cuttings are almost 100%, and since you need to prune anyway, they are basically free.

I worked for a nursery that grew kiwi and while green cuttings would root easily in a mist bench with bottom heat, dormant cuttings wouldn't root well at all. They would graft well, but not root. So when a new kiwi variety came in as dormant cuttings it was grafted. Then when it grew, we took green shoots and rooted them.

I find that the fuzzy are very hard to grow from cuttings, but the hardy grow really well from winter dormant cuttings. I have also grafted some, including fuzzy on hardy rootstock. Some didn't take, some did and died, some survived.

I hope to trade for many different kinds of hardy kiwi. If someone has a lot of varieties please send me an email.
