Just found this forum, tons of great info! We just ordered 100 bench graft apples, mostly cider apples. M111 rootstock. We just cleared the land where the trees will live. Until the ground is ready for planting (next spring) would it be better to plant direct in our fenced, protected garden, or in pots in same garden? I've read many opinions but no concensus. some say the pots will stunt the tap root. But I'm also concerned it will be difficult to dig next spring if planted straight into the garden beds. We have enough #3 and bigger pots, would that work? Deer, rabbits and voles are an issue so we need this summer and fall to get the fencing and gates secure in the new orchard. Thanks for your opinions and advice!!!!
