I recently ordered 3 hazelnut (or filbert) trees/bushes from Burnt Ridge nursery.
I guess the hazelnut bushes I've seen in the past have been young. When I was driving the other day past hazelnut orchards, I was surprised how large they were. And indeed, when I look them up, I see that their expected size is approximately 9-24 feet.
That's quite a bit of range. I also read that they can be easily coppiced.
I guess my questions are:
* Can hazelnuts be pruned to keep them manageable (let's say about 10 feet high).
* Does this interfere with nut production?
* Has anyone here coppiced their hazelnuts? With three, I guess I could rotate every x years, and still have 2 to pollinate each other.
I am always appreciative of your experience!
We've got a bunch of wild hazelnuts (or filberts?! Can't remember which is which, think the farmers say they grow hazelnuts and sell filberts!) and they range in all sizes; from small recently seeded to old growth many trunked ones 25-30' tall. Most of the orchards around here (likely source of our "wild" ones!) seem to keep their's at about 15-20'; but the modern thing is to plant smaller trees closer together, just like fruit orchards! But only recently have people started developing smaller trees, you might check out this link:

Which is a fairly new orchard near Corvallis, also has some apples - though they've been raising nuts for many years; they moved recently so this orchard is all very recently planted.
