Grafting in April?

Hi all:

I finally got my grafting supplies by mail order, and now it's April 6th. In the Portland area, is it now too late to graft? Should I wait until summer and bud instead?

I have another question, but I'll put it in a separate thread.

What type of grafting do you want to do? I think its a good time to do bark grafting but I haven't checked to see if the bark is slipping lately. I know I did some on March 31, 2007 and it worked great. I am not a grafting expert but I'd still do whip grafting too if I had any to do. The key would be to make sure the scion wood is dormant.

I was planning to do whip grafting. I believe the scion wood is still dormant, but I'll double check before starting. Thanks for your reply!

Jade,

Its perfectly fine to graft now using whip and tongue.

I find the bark grafts even easier. In my yard I would guess some of the trees have slipping bark and some don't (actually branches in the same tree even).

I've done both types of grafts using dormant wood into June and have had success. Plumfan has done grafts much later than that using non-dormant scions.

The main issue is the quality of your scion wood.

Thank you guys. This was the first time I grafted something completely by myself, and it didn't fit as cleanly as those I've seen in the past. But I wouldn't be surprised if it takes. Can't wait to find out!

I’m impatiently looking forward to late April for some serious bark grafting... I suspect we’re a week ‘behind’ due to an unusually cool spring… But my wood’s good – and as point out – that’s what counts 8)
