I just made my first grafts this year. The pears and Asian pears have woken up. They are starting to unfurl their leaf and flower buds, so I figured that it's time to graft. I tried to graft Orcas on another pear and on quince, and Chojuro on Asian pear.
My cherries and quinces have also woken up. Apples are still sleepy.

Nice. I grafted what I think is Golden Russet to a couple of thin M26 rootstocks that I propagated from layered suckers yesterday. I finally cut the top off of my big tree that was grafted way too high. Golden Russet has an unruly growth habit, so I'm looking forward to having it on its own tree that can be pruned accordingly.
I'll be doing other stuff during spring break. Next will be adding Abate Fetel to quince and its own pear rootstock.

Persimmons are a long ways off.
D.Lotus is leafing out substantially. The Saijo on it is a little behind, the leaf buds still tight but green, nearly an inch long, pushing.
If I had something nice to put on there I'd not hesitate.

Jafar got me thinking about something the other day. His persimmons leafed out way before mine. SOme of mine are in the shade of some buildings until later in the year. I think that also may be why mine don't seem to take to grafting early. I've had more success late May-June than earlier. Always interesting to hear other people's experiences and try to adjust and learn from them.
