hello! I am wondering if it is a good idea to plant a cherry tree within about 10 feet of a concrete pad (driveway)? I would be creating a bed for it by reducing my lawn size as well (so, it is also a good candidate for planting near a lawn area?
I am having a sneaking suspicion that cherry roots might be invasive? could they lift and crack a driveway in the future?
Thanks
Oh boy. It was purchased at a fund raiser for a school.
The tag says "cherry".
Are some cherry rootstocks more aggressive than others?
If some are aggressive, and I dont know what rootstock mine is, then I would prefer to error on the side of caution. It seems to me that I have heard that fruiting cherries are really not a landscape plant, due to really thirsty and rampant root systems.
Thanks
Karla

It depends. My Montmorency pie cherry is an outstanding landscape plant. Beautiful flowers, small size, easy care, the fruit hanging is just spectacularly beautiful. Oh yeah, I love the fruit too. It's probably a sweet cherry tree. It's hard to tell. You could bring the fruit to the HOS summer budding workshop if it's still viable, or freeze it and bring it to the Fall All about fruit show. If you live by someone who knows, you could ask or bring in leaves and ripe fruit to a good nursery. Call them first.
